Essential Refinements to the Cheng Man-ch’ing Short Form

with Robert Chuckrow, Ph.D.

Seal

The following topics will be illustrated by movements of Cheng man-ch’ing’s short form (primarily Ward Off left, Roll Back, Single Whip, and Punch) plus some push-hands and self-defense scenarios:

• Continuity and circularity of transitions including the timing of shifting and turning the body relative to the motion of the hands.

• Independence of motion vs. unification of movement.

• Elucidation of “A hand is not a hand” (an admonition that Prof. Cheng emphasized).
